History of the Hawker Hurricane
The Hurricane fought in all the major battles of the Second World War in service with the Britain Royal Air Force.
A major reason for the aircraft's appeal was its relatively simple construction and ease of manufacture. It was significantly cheaper than the Supermarine Spitfire and it took 10,300 man hours to produce. The production was quicker to scale.
On 12 October 1937, the maiden flight of the first production Hurricane I which was powered by a Merlin II engine took place, flown by Flight Lieutenant Philip Lucas.
